The whole face is a grid of engraved dots. Background dots get a light pass and the dots that spell your message get a deep pass, so the message reads like the lit bulbs on a highway sign.
On Auto, the dots grow as big as your message allows: short messages get big, bold dots, and longer ones get smaller dots. The preview shows the letter height. Pick a fixed dot size if you want a certain look.
Flip it around: the background dots go deep and your message stays light. It's a bolder, darker sign with the letters showing in the board color.
Use the arrow buttons, or type < > ^ and _ for left, right, up and down. Each arrow takes about two letters of space.
